On 30-31 May 2024, the Albanian Erasmus+ Office in cooperation with HERE team Albania jointly organized online National HERE Seminar titled: ‘The Role of AI in the Development of Scientific Research and Innovation in Humanities’. The meeting was attended by representatives from several public and private universities, including vice-rectors, deans, representatives of international relations offices, IT lecturers etc.
Ms. Diane Andone, the SPHERE expert, shared her valuable expertise with the participants during two days of the seminar.
The implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Albanian education system can bring significant improvements in teaching and learning quality. Below are some recommendations for the effective use of AI in Albanian education:
- Personalized Teaching:
- Use AI to create personalized learning programs tailored to the needs and learning pace of each student.
- Support for Teachers and Educators in Assessment:
- Implement AI tools to assist educators in evaluating exams and projects, saving time on these processes.
- Train teachers and educators to effectively use AI tools in the classroom during the learning process.
- Online and Distance Learning:
- Integrate AI systems into online learning platforms to create a more interactive and engaging experience for students.
- Use chatbots and virtual assistants to answer students’ questions and provide support during learning.
- Data Analysis and Quality Improvement:
- Utilize AI systems to collect and analyze student performance data to identify weaknesses and suggest improvements.
- Use AI to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of different teaching methods and help improve curricula.
- Support for Students with Special Needs:
- Implement AI technologies to support students with special needs by providing tools and resources that help them engage in the learning process.
- Students with visual impairments can benefit greatly from AI tools that use speech recognition technology.
- Encouraging Creativity and Innovation:
- Use AI to develop projects and activities that foster creativity and critical thinking in students.
- Create innovation labs where students can experiment with AI technologies and develop advanced technological skills.
- Ethics and Privacy:
- Ensure that the use of AI in education adheres to the highest standards of student data privacy and protection.
- Educate students and teachers on the ethics of AI usage, its impact, and its potential risks in society.
- Collaboration with International Educational Institutions:
- Establish partnerships with educational institutions and international organizations to share best practices and develop joint projects.
- Participate in international conferences and seminars to stay updated with the latest developments in AI and education.
- Reviewing Exam/Assessment Structures:
- Educators can also review the types of questions or exam formats, focusing on questions that require analysis rather than those that demand mere definitions.
- The focus should be on designing assessments that promote the development of students’ creative and critical thinking skills.
- Addressing Disparities in Digital Tool Usage:
- The inclusion of AI tools in education, such as ChatGPT, offers significant potential benefits but also raises concerns that may worsen existing inequalities.
- A key issue is the potential widening of the gap between students with access to advanced technology and those without.
- Limited availability of these tools in some countries due to government regulations, censorship, or internet restrictions may hinder their adoption and use in regions where they could be particularly beneficial.
- Another critical concern is unequal internet access, cost, and speed across different regions. These disparities can hinder equal access to the benefits AI offers in education, further deepening existing inequalities.
- Addressing these challenges is essential to ensure that the benefits of AI in education are accessible to all students, regardless of their geographic or socio-economic circumstances.
